Piano Lessons

WELCOME!
If you are interested in signing up your child for lessons, please email or call to schedule an appointment to observe a lesson with an enrolled student. At this time you may pick up a registration form and tuition schedule. Once you decide that this program is right for your child, you may register, pay for tuition, and we will schedule a time-slot. The first lesson will start in a week or two, but we must first prepare the home environment. Please have your piano tuned and order an adjustable bench and footstool (as needed). The family is recommended to start listening to the CD of Suzuki Piano School book one before the first class begins. Parents are asked to begin reading "Nurtured by Love" and "Ability Development From Age Zero" by Dr. Suzuki.
THE LESSON
Gaining skill as a pianist is a long-term project. Each student progresses at his/her own rate and with the help, guidance, support, and encouragement of parents and others.

1) Plan to spend an hour at the lesson each week. For the very young student, it is the majority part of an hour that he/she can attend profitably to the lesson in progress.

2) The parent should arrive before the lesson hour and take time for the student to remove shoes, wash hands, and get a drink of water. Be prepared with music books, notebook, and filled-out practice sheet. The parent of the young child may help set the bench and footstool. Allow time for observation of other lessons and computer lab.

3) The lesson time is not only for the student, but also for the parent in attendance to observe closely, take notes, and learn along with the student for efficient and effective coaching and support of the student during the daily home practice sessions.

a) While the student is at the piano, the parent is encouraged to ask questions and talk with the teacher about the lesson materials, special studies, in home practicing, and any other items that need clarification or attention from the teacher. Please have your questions ready and ask them at the beginning or end of the lesson.

b) Parents are also encouraged to communicate by phone or write a note and hand it to the teacher if what is to be said is not for the ears of the student.

4) The parent is responsible for playing the CD/tapes on a daily basis softly in the background during waking hours and at night during rest.

5) The parent agrees to be the practice supervisor for the young beginner at home daily with the following in mind:

6) The goal of the parent is to make your help a thing of the past as student skills and independence increases over time.

THE STUDIO RULES OF CONDUCT
1) Use voice and behavior that will not disturb other students.

2) Leave all food and drinks (including gum and candy) outside.

3) Please turn off cell phones or in the case of emergency situations:

* Switch the phone to "vibrate" mode
* Leave the room and answer outside
* Alert the teacher before the lesson begins that you are expecting a call.

4) Remove any jewelry from wrists and fingers while at the piano and keep nails trimmed short.

5) For safety please DO NOT run or jump inside or outside on the stairs.

THE MUSIC LAB
A portion of the lesson will be in the music lab. The student will work independently at the computer and midi keyboard through a series of progressive and planned assignments in theory, ear training, sight-reading, rhythm training, music appreciation, and ensemble performance practice.

THE MUSIC LAB RULES OF CONDUCT
1) Young students in the music lab must be supervised by a parent or coach.

2) The student uses the headphones and talks quietly if necessary.

3) The student completes the lesson assignment for the day to the best of his/her ability, and records the daily scores in his/her folder.

4) Please do not disturb the lesson at the piano in progress. If there is a problem in the lab you may ask another student or parent for assistance or choose another activity.

INFORMATION
A free exchange of information is essential for scheduling and successful easy learning during lessons.

1) Please call at other times than the lesson to talk with the teacher and discuss any issue or questions regarding the student/lessons that would be best be discussed in private.

2) Please let the teacher know what assistance can be given before, during, or after the lesson to promote better understanding and/or cooperation by the student.

3) Parents are responsible for checking the monthly studio calendar for notification of upcoming events and of when the studio is closed.

ATTENDANCE
Regular weekly attendance is crucial for progress to be made. My commitment to the parent and student is a continual one. It means committing to and actively considering the needs of every student enrolled in the program.

1) Make-ups for individual lessons are scheduled in addition to but not in place of the regular scheduled class and cannot be credited toward account balances.

2) Make-up lessons are not guaranteed and will be offered as scheduling permits with 24 hours advance notification. Make-up lessons are not available in last minute cases of excess homework, rescheduled sports practices, or other school activities. Lessons unable to be made up within the month will be forfeited.

3) The courtesy of calling makes the time available for another student to take a make-up.

4) Try to trade a lesson time if you know in advance that you will miss a lesson. A phone list will be provided by request.

5) There will be no make-ups for group classes.

6) The student should not attend a lesson in the studio when ill, especially with a cough and runny nose - please call for a phone conference.
